Destiny 2: How to Rocket Grapple

Here's how to rocker grapple in Destiny 2, one of the coolest, yet riskiest traversal methods in the game.

Ever since the Strand subclass hit Destiny 2 with the Lightfall expansion, players have been experimenting with the increased mobility and build potential its abilities allow. Inevitably, some began wondering how to rocket grapple. It’s exactly what it sounds like, but it’s also not the easiest trick to pull off, as you’ll want specific setups to start the learning process. Once you know how it works, you can do it with any physical projectile.

Here’s the quick version of how to rocket grapple in Destiny 2:

  • Use a Rocket Launcher (RL) that you feel comfortable with. Consider Gjallarhorn or Ascendency.
  • Aim directly above you, such that you can’t look up any further.
  • Fire your rocket.
  • The instant after you fire, activate your grapple with your aim straight up.

How to Rocket Grapple in Detail: Key Tips and Tricks

The concept of the rocket grapple is simple: you shoot a rocket, then use the Grapple ability on it to let the projectile pull you along. Doing it consistently is a matter of very specific, very tight timing. Every rocket launcher in Destiny 2 has a different projectile velocity, and the faster the rocket goes, the faster you need to press grapple to attach to the missile.

To start learning how to rocket grapple, I recommend using either Gjallarhorn or Ascendency, as they have 40 and 51 Velocity, respectively. Many other RLs have upward of 60-70 Velocity, and more if they have a Masterwork or the per sets for it.

As mentioned above, you’ll need to aim straight up, fire your rocket, and shoot your grapple straight up as soon as you fire. If you get the timing right (and it will probably take a few tries), you’ll watch your grapple point take off into the distance. Depending on how high the skybox limit is, you might find yourself catapulted into heavy fall damage territory. Most zones have a fairly low ceiling, so you won’t go too high.

Once you have the timing down, you can start trying to rocket grapple around a map rather than up away from it. The kicker is you’ll need to account for the launcher’s recoil, so take some time to learn how your weapon kicks, then try to grapple around the arena.

Other Things You Can Rocket Grapple

You can also grapple on other in-world projectiles like the Lumina’s Noble Rounds or the Mountaintop’s Micro Missiles, but you’ll need to do some time tuning to hit those on top of your favorite rocket. Other than that, there isn’t much to learn how to rocket grapple besides practice.

That’s how to rocket grapple in Destiny 2. If you’re looking for more content on the game’s masses of activities and abilities, check out our guides on how to get the Wicked Implement Exotic, farm Legendary Shards, and more in our D2 guides hub.
