Naughty Dog, the creators of the hit Uncharted series, are rumored to be working on a new project — possibly a sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us. The sequel, long awaited by fans, has not been officially announced, but considering some hints from Naughty Dog, it’s likely that they will announce it soon, possibly at E3.
The first clue that supports this is the fact that Naughty Dog mentioned working on some prototypes of a sequel to the The Last of Us before beginning Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End — and said that they would revisit those prototypes once they had finished that series’ swan song.
According to Neil Druckmann, creative director of Naughty Dog, the game’s designers have been hard at work brainstorming a satisfactory way to follow up on the ideas in The Last of Us:
“When Bruce (Straley) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters. We were also brainstorming ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.”
The biggest hint, however, comes from Uncharted 4 itself. A poster found in game, pictured above, shows an apocalyptic background with a pregnant women wearing a gas mask. While the title is covered up, it appears to read The Last of Us, with the subtitle “American Daughters.” Is the woman pictured a grown-up Ellie? Or a different character entirely? Perhaps we’ll know when E3 rolls around.
