Before it was a blockbuster video game franchise, The Witcher was a series of eight fantasy novels written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Now, The Witcher is coming to the small screen as a television series. Netflix will produce and develop the property alongside Platige Image, an award-winning Polish computer graphics and animation studio.
Sapkowski will have an active role in the development of the series as a creative consultant. He is not only excited to have his vision of The Witcher universe expand and come to life outside of CD Projekt Red’s video game franchise, but also “thrilled” that Netflix and Platige Image are working to stay faithful to his source material.
“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories. Staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing.”
Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko will be executive producers on the series. Baginski is a Polish illustrator, animator, and director who has worked on and directed cinematics for all three Witcher games; he is also set to direct at least one episode of the show per season. Jarek Sawko is a BAFTA award-winning producer and visual effects artist.
Speaking of The Witcher, Baginski and Sawko said that The Witcher series is one about everyday heroes and how their actions translate to the everyman.
“There is a moral and intellectual depth to these books, which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and he hero inside all of our hearts.”
Currently, there is no release date for The Witcher television series, and it is unknown if it will be entirely CG or if it will be a mixture of CG and live action.
