A Pokemon Gravestone: How Will You Be Remembered?

A gravestone in Sweden honors the memory of a young boy... and his love for Pokemon.
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

In a quiet green corner of Lund, Sweden, is a tombstone. It isn't one of those soulless, simple, angular affairs surrounded by a wide pelt of close-trimmed grass where you aren't allowed to plant flowers such as you'd find in most modern-day cemeteries.

It is a beautifully carved stone that belongs to Joakim Stambolovski, a five-year-old boy whose loved ones had this stone fashioned in honor of his memory... and also his love of Pokemon

It was brought to the attention of the general internet public by user paramorgue, a man living in the same city who loves the stone (not to mention the boy's taste in pokemon), and uploaded images of it to his imgur that have since been spread to over 500,000 people and counting.

It is a sweet, sad, and stark reminder of what is to come, particularly for those of us who never knew this child, and only see him depicted forever as one of us - a gamer, and (at least from all appearances) a passionate one.

So many of us identify so closely with being a GAMER, often to the point where they make up an integral part of your identity. Would your friends recognize you away from keyboard? Do you feel naked without your headset or your Vita close at hand?

Is your love of gaming passionate enough that it is the key defining aspect of you that your loved ones can bring out of the stone?

We often joke about what to put on our gravestones, and as self-professed geeks, the answers run the gamut from outright silliness ("GG", "Forgot to save"), to memorable quotes ("Beloved Sister; Beloved Friend; She saved the world a lot") because as a whole we reject the idea of death as something to be taken seriously.

But say you do take it seriously for a moment. Would you like to be remembered in this way?

If you think of us as a generation laid to the dust, will we join the others with their perfectly uniform stones underneath an empty bed of grass? Or do you think we will still seek to self-identify our passions and life loves to the point of commemorating it in stone for when we're gone?

Do you think left to us, we will see a resurgence in Weeping Angels, Daenerys with her dragons, Yuna dancing over our pyreflies?
