Best of Convention Cross-Booking Trainwrecks

Sometimes, booking a gaming, anime or sci fi con alongside a more 'normal' event is an opportunity for growth. Other times, it's an opportunity for disaster.
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

My friends got back from Katsucon 2013 last night full of stories of this year’s epic cross-booking at the Gaylord National. And that got me thinking:

Why do conventions so often get cross booked with events that will clearly not play well together?

Once upon a time, I wound up in an elevator dressed like a ninja next to a man in formal military dress, striving to make normal conversation while he looked at me as though I might possibly be contagious (being a germaphobe who regularly gives that look to other people, I understand).

But still.

Check out the list I’ve started, and add your own pictures and stories (either in the comments here, or in a new post tagged “Con stories”).

Best of Cross Bookings

1. Rodeo: Cowboys were buying tickets to the con, then making fun of and harassing the attendees. Not a great mix.

2. Little League Soccer Team: They didn’t cause trouble, but the moms were definitely casting some looks as they exited elevators.

3. Romantic Couples Getaway: Made somewhat worse by the fact that it was Valentine’s Day weekend at an expensive location – the couples were typically weirded out, mildly fascinated, or scandalized.

4. Black-Tie Military Order Ball: What do you get when you cross a bunch of cosplayers with a formal military event? Lots of people asking if they can have a picture of your Fullmetal Alchemist costume. *wince*

5. Add yours in the comments or make a new post: This is just a small sample of the cross-bookings I’ve seen, and I know darned well there have been more. Share your story and help us compile the best (worst) list of all the conventions that have shared space with other groups.
