It is that time of the year again: the video game calendar resets with the annual E3 showcase. If you are like me, then you plan your holidays for the next 12 months based off of what is revealed at E3 each summer.

Metal Gear, it can’t be? Yeah, yeah it is. The Phantom Pain had its trailer launched a little early by an eager beaver at Konami, then pulled just as quick. This is the age of the internet, no information is ever removed. Ever.

There is a lot going on in the trailer and some of it is not the most pleasant to view; however, it is Hideo Kojima and will need multiple viewings to take in the content and context of the world he is creating.

The Phantom What?

In the main story set in 1984, Snake finally awakens from his coma and forms a new mercenary group, the Diamond Dogs. Now assuming the codename “Punished Snake”, he ventures into Afghanistan during the Soviet war to track down the men responsible for MSF’s destruction. Along the way, he becomes reacquainted with his former rival Ocelot and encounters a unit of warriors robbed of their past, present and future. While he and Kaz are initially driven to exact revenge, Snake soon unearths a plot by the Cipher organization to develop a weapon with the potential to surpass even the Metal Gear system.
