Finding Love in Online Games

Ways to stay safe and still have a chance to find a relationship while playing games.
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Many of the games today allow you to talk and make friends with your fellow gamers. Quite often as you talk to other gamers, you will discover they are from all over the world and your own backyard. I have met and made friends from Russia, Germany, England, Ireland, the Middle East, the Dominican Republic, and all over the United States. I have made friends on international games that live in the same city as I do and in cities just down the road.

After multiple friendships and online relationships, I have found my soul mate. I have now found the man I will spend the rest of my life with, the man I will marry, and the one I live with. But, understand, finding love online is as rare as finding love at home. It takes time and effort. And you have to go into it with your eyes open and protecting yourself as you go. But even if you do not find love, you should find friends and a great deal of fun.

It is important to start with guidelines:

  1. If you are underage, do not give out your name, age, or location to anyone. It is amazing what can be figured out from the smallest amount of information. And, even if you are an adult, play it smart. Do not just start telling everyone your name, age, and location. Use your game name. Get to know people. You do not want a crazy person able to figure out where you live. I saw a video once where they showed that a stalker could track down a teenager with a first name and the fact that she was a cheerleader for the Cougars in North Florida. That was enough using newspaper clippings and the internet to track down the teenager to her home. A scary thought.
  2. Always tell the truth, or at least close enough to the truth it is not going to come back and bite you. If you are 5 foot 10, and prefer people to think of you as 5 foot 2, just don’t give a height. But if you start getting involved with someone, you will have to get into more specifics. But if you start by saying you look like a 5 foot 10 model and you are 4 foot 8 and not super thin, you would have trouble later meeting the people you told this to.
  3. Take your time. There is no need to meet someone online and decide you have to meet them in person the next week. Meeting online people can hide a great many things. Take the time to get to know them, their personalities, their humor, their interests, and what they love about the game you are playing.

So, given those guidelines, how do you find someone to care about, to love?

The very first thing you have to do is talk. Talk to the people around you in the game. If you have trouble talking to people, make an effort to talk to one person per day, and once per week add a new person. Remember to talk.

And while you are talking, make friends. Talk about what is going on in your life. Ask about their lives. Talk about their likes and dislikes. Get to know them.

And repeat.

The most important part of finding love in online games is to be safe, get out there and meet people, be open to the possibility of finding romance, and have patience while relationships blossom.

I am a gamer with years and years of game play. I started with Dungeons and Dragons on paper and with dice when I was barely a teenager. Currently, I spend a lot of time with my two amazing grandchildren and the love of my life. My favorite games are Guild Wars 2 and Perfect World.
