Fortnite x Avatar’s Missing Sokka Skin: Total Snub or Perfect Irony?

Sokka is just the guy with the boomerang. He didn't ask for all this flying and magic.

Following Korra’s introduction to the game last week, the Fortnite x Avatar collab just got bigger with the addition of new character skins, weapons, and more. You can now pick up outfits for Katara, Toph, and Zuko in the item shop for 2,000 V-Bucks each, with Aang’s arrival slated for April 12. While this is a huge win for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, they’ve wasted no time pointing out Sokka’s glaring absence from the event — and I have to laugh at the irony of EPIC’s decision.

As one of the series’ most beloved characters, Sokka was assumed to appear alongside the other members of Team Avatar with the collab’s arrival in Fortnite. However, things have turned out a bit differently. ATLA’s comedic relief character didn’t receive a skin of his own, leaving many longtime fans disappointed, though not entirely surprised considering his lack of bending abilities. Sokka’s Space Sword and Water Tribe weapon did make it into the game, though.

Sokka’s Fortnite Snub Is Fittingly Ironic

You can call it a snub. But, in a roundabout way, Sokka’s absence in Fortnite is also the perfect continuation of one of the show’s funniest gags — at least throughout the animated series. From the jump, Sokka plays the sarcastic warrior type, albeit a bit sexist in the first few episodes. We know (and love) him as the guy with the boomerang, often the butt of non-bender jokes and Toph’s jabs. He didn’t ask for all this flying and magic, after all.

That said, Sokka is frequently overlooked by friends and foes. As the show goes on, though, we watch him come into his own as a fighter and a valued member of the group. He serves his allies well as he fosters an appreciation for his friends’ techniques, hones his combat skills, and eventually becomes a master swordsman, wielding the specially forged Space Sword that you can now claim for yourself in Fortnite.

Despite his arc in the series, however, it looks like it’s still three on three — minus Sokka. While fans are understandably bummed that Team Avatar is down a member in Fortnite, I can’t help but see the humor in the lore-accurate snub, too. Toph is probably laughing somewhere on the map as we speak.
