The Thanksgiving holiday will be here before you know it and that can only mean one thing, getting time off of school or work. The same could be said for the Christmas holiday break so you'll have plenty of time on your hands to do things.
You could read a good book or build something. Who am I kidding, the only thing you can do is play video games. The holidays give you time to finally play that game you haven't had time for. Long games are the best when you finally get that long weekend to beat it.
Super Smash Bros-Wii U/3DS
Lets start this off right with the game that everyone needs. Super Smash Brothers, both the 3DS and Wii U versions, are played best with family and friends. Both of those things gather around during the holidays so why wouldn't a massive multi-player game not be perfect for the holidays. You'll be able to show your family and friends just who is the best of the best! Settle the argument over the last piece of pie with a game of an eight player Smash Battle.
Pokemon-3DS/DS/Game Boy
The Pokemon franchise is one of my favorites. The only problem is that you need some time to play it. Stop me if you've heard this one before, the holidays is a perfect time for video games. It doesn't matter which Pokemon game you play. It could be the return to Hoenn in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. It could be the Kalos region in X and Y. It could be my personal favorite Johto region in Gold and Silver where I can raise my Totodile and Heracross like the gold old days!
Donkey Kong Country-Super Nintendo
This weekend was the 20th anniversary of Donkey Kong Country and what better way to celebrate the occasion then to take some time out of your Thanksgiving and beat it. The 3D rendered characters on 2D environments bring out the best of Rare and the Super Nintendo. Get Donkey Kong his banana horde back and defeat King K. Rool. I doubt you'll see him again so get in there and take him down.( what do you mean, he comes back twice on the SNES. Someone better check their facts)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past-Super Nintendo
Very long(time-wise) and Zelda games go hand-in-hand and A Link to the Past is no different. I received A Link to the Past for Christmas years ago and loved every minute of it. To this day, it's still one of, if not my favorite game. It does everything right in terms of story, music, and graphics. The dungeon designs and weapons, like the hook-shot, are still Zelda mainstays. Link needs to stop Ganon from taking over Hyrule with the Tri-Force and bring the Dark World into the light. Save the seven maidens and restore order to the land of Hyrule before it's too late.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time-Nintendo 64/3DS
If I felt that A Link to the Past was one of my favorite games, then Ocarina of Time has to be up there too. Ocarina of Time is just A Link to the Past with better graphics. Keep Ganondorf/Ganon from getting into the Sacred Realm and using the Tri-Force to turn Hyrule into the Dark World. The music is some of the best in the franchise as well as in gaming. Use the Master Sword become the Hero of Time and take the Tri-Force, Zelda, and the land of Hyrule back from the forces of evil!
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars- Super Nintendo
Nintendo and Square came together for one of the best Role Playing Games around. It took Nintendo's golden boy, Mario, and built an RPG out of the Mushroom Kingdom, complete with new enemies. It still had the core characters of Mario, Princess Toadstool, and Bowser. It also had some new enemies like Smithy, the "Bowser" of the game. Team up with Mallow, Geno, the Princess, and"gasp" Bowser, to help keep peace in the Mushroom Kingdom. Use special attacks in turn based fights to level up and defeat the mechanical monsters from Smithy.
Super Mario 64-Nintendo 64
Super Mario 64 is the game that many credit for bringing gaming into the 3D era and out of 2D. Super Mario 64 was a launch title for the Nintendo 64 and got tons of people on board with 3D gaming and Nintendo. Mario was invited to the castle for cake from the Princess and when he got there, she wasn't there. Bowser had already taken her captive and built up a strong-hold in the castle. It's up to Mario to regain the 120 Power Stars and use them to gain access into the various floors in the castle to rescue the Princess. Mario rescuing the Princess, so crazy it just might work!
Kirby's Adventure-Nintendo Entertainment System
The first Kirby game on the Nintendo Entertainment System didn't disappoint. Dream Land is in trouble again and it's up to our favorite pink puff to save the day. Kirby is able to take over enemy powers but you probably knew that already. Kirby will have to use all his abilities and attacks to stop King Dedede from using the Star Rod to torment Dream Land. Kirby's Adventure has some of the best music in the series as well as some interesting boss battles.
Super Mario Brothers 3-Nintendo Entertainment System
Coming off of the "not-so-much-like-Mario" Super Mario Brothers 2, Nintendo came back with a more traditional Super Mario Brothers 3. Common enemies like the Goomba, Koopa Troopas, and Hammer Brothers joined some newcomers like the Sledge Brothers and Fire Brothers. This time around, Bowser brought his Koopa Kids into the fold to help kidnap the seven rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom and steal their scepters as well as the Princess.
Only Mario and Luigi can help save the day with some help from Toad in various locations. Combine that with the new power-ups like the Frog Suit, Hammer Brothers Suit, and Kuribo's Shoe and the Mario Brothers have just what they need to defeat King Koopa.
Super Mario World-Super Nintendo Entertainment System
We've reached the end of the line and I know what your thinking. You're thinking this list is pretty Mario heavy and in a way, you're right. Mario games are long and you need some time to play them. Super Mario World was the first Mario game for the Super Nintendo and it built off of Super Mario Brothers 3. It brought Mario platforming into the 16 bit generation.
It also brought Yoshi into the Mario Universe and now, it feels like you can't think of the Mario games without him. Dinosaur Land had been taken over by the Koopas and Bowser, with help from the Koopaling, has taken the Princess hostage while her and the Mario Bros were on vacation. Do you have what it takes to join forces with the Mario Brothers, rescue the Princess, and save Dinosaur Land?
