How It All Began
A year ago, I would not have thought my views would have changed so much. I was so determined to become a developer that I thought there was nothing that could deter my drive. But one night after ranting to a friend about a topic involving games and their stories, he told me to write it down and post it on this site.
At first I was apprehensive. I have always had a hard time just sitting down and getting my thoughts straight let alone getting them down on paper. But I did it. I created an account and started writing. Forcing myself to continue, I managed to bang out an article late that night. I was actually quite proud of myself but I knew no one might read it or even care. But it was done and I had finally put my voice out there.
The next day I looked online to find something interesting. Amy, Senior Editor of the site, had messaged me about my article and not only featured it but promoted it to the front page. I was ecstatic! Something inside me clicked and the writing became easier and the words became more natural. This was when the next phase came in…
The Internship’s Beginning
Soon after writing a few articles, the opportunity to join in a beta phase for the GameSkinny internship opened up. I jumped on it. For some reason I felt I had to and this was exactly what I needed to do.
Feeling sort of awkward, I was all nice and polite when introducing myself to everyone on my team but as soon as we had our first Skype meeting… Well, Ashley kind of made it easier for all us to not feel weird. I mean that with the utmost respect as well. She is a really weird but she is hard working, nice and helped us all so much through this entire process of finding all our own individual footing.
Coming together
We all quickly found what we were good at and we all really excelled. Everyone was so helpful and understanding of situations out of our control as well. I personally dealt with an entire move, a car accident and 2 jobs while doing this internship. In fact, we all struggled a little through this process but we prevailed!
Not just as individuals but as a team.
I might be exaggerating but I think we all found a unity and build a trust and friendship of a small family. The thought of maybe losing them going into the next phase actually deeply concerns me. But still I remain positive and strong in my thoughts that we have pulled through and will come out on top!
Final thoughts
GameSkinny’s beta internship has changed everything for me. This is what I want with my life. Without the encouragement of my team, the helping words of Amy and Katy and the wonderful people taking time to read and comment on my articles, I might not be going down this path.
This is what I want to do. Games are my life and talking about them is my drive. I might have never learned this about myself if not for a good push by a friend and a helping hand of my colleagues.
With the internship entering the Bastion Phase and me remaining ever hopeful that GameSkinny will see my passion and, hopefully, my skill, I want this to be my life.
I want to travel and talk to developers. I want to get my first chance to sit at a press conference and talk about my first thoughts on a game. More then any of that, I want to dig deep into what I consider game philosophy and really talk about what it is to be a game developer, how games are made, why and what makes them good.
Games are not merely a hobby or a simple pass time to me nor do I talk about these things casually. I nitpick and overreact to the things that mean so much to mean. I take a game and will break it down to it’s minute details and point out the things that make it incredible AND flawed. I sit there and argue with a friend about a game for hours because I simply feel a need to. And do you know why?
