Lightning Returns: Fanservice Ain’t Fair

'13 days until the end of the world? Whatever will I wear!?'
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

When I first heard that Lightning Returns was due for release, I was thrilled. I was extremely hopeful that it would take the overall happiness that I felt with XIII-2 “fixing” what was wrong with the original and as Emeril Lagasse would say “kick it up a notch.”

Here it comes, the screenshots and gameplay details – and I was ready to dig in!

Okay, 13 day countdown timer, cool.

Revved up difficulty, yummy.

Customizable costumes for Lighting…

Uhm, no.

Don’t get me wrong here I love a little dress up.

For instance,Final Fantasy X-2 dresspheres put a really cute and strategic tweak to the gameplay. Lightning’s outfits do look beautiful and some even match her personality, but come on ya’ll: does Lightning even look like the type to wear costumes? Heck, does she even look like the the type to really smile? Some of these costumes are a little on the racy side too.

Somehow I have this itching feeling this wouldn’t fly with, say, Snow.

Another thing, it doesn’t look like the storyline is going to be sunshine and rainbows from the trailer. If you’re going to set such a serious tone with a theme like the end of the world, don’t you think you shouldn’t break the fouth wall with frills? Also, why would you fit something so fluffy with a story that’s money back guaranteed going to break my heart?

I’ll take a stab at why.

It’s all about the fanservice, baby

And that’s what a lot of fans like to see. Admittedly it is fun to take a character and put a silly twist on them, but maybe save that for the second playthrough.

With all that being said, I’m still pumped for this game in the most crazed type of way, but taking the costumes out of it would make it a better experience.
