People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has collaborated with rock band The Smiths to put out an online video game called This Beautiful Creature Must Die.
Developed by independent studio This is Pop, the game is based off of the band’s song “Meat is Murder,” released in 1985. It did a lot at the time to garner attention for the work that PETA seeks to accomplish.
This Beautiful Creature Must Die is a simple 8-bit game where players must save cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys from being slaughtered by bloody blades. It breaks up the screen into a grid where each type of animal is on the brink of slaughter in each pane. Saving the animals is as simple as clicking the pane where the animal is located. However, as the game progresses, the rate at which the animals drop increases.
In the background, an arcade-style version of “Meat is Murder” is played on a loop.
