People Are Paying Real Money For The Smash Brothers 3DS Demo

Nintendo accidentally creates a thriving demo code black market for Smash Bros 3DS.
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Select Club Nintendo Platinum members got a nice surprise today as they received four codes for the Smash Brothers 3DS demo that won’t be available to the public until next week. The lucky recipients can now get their demo and give three other codes to their friends…or attempt to sell them for profit. Of course, who would possibly spend good money on a demo?

Oh.

That is an eBay listing for a Smash Brothers 3DS demo code that’s now over $20 dollars after 20 bids. This is a demo that will be released to the public, for free, in a week and only features five characters and one stage. Not only are there other eBay listings with bids on them, but people have begged on Reddit and Twitch.tv for a code, some even going so far as to offer gift cards and other forms of payment.

There are some advantages to owning the Club Nintendo version of the demo such as the earlier access and having unlimited uses (the public demo has 30 uses), but is it worth money for what amounts to a bare bones demo?

No, no it isn’t. If you’re willing to spend money on a demo, you should probably just preorder Smash Brothers for 3DS at your local game store. It comes out on October 3rd, so you won’t be waiting long. I promise.
