With the multitude of conferences that have come, the Playstation conference, E3, Gamescom, and now PAX, Sony has yet to fully showcase the capabilities of the Playstation Eye. This is somewhat surprising because originally the Playstation Eye 2.0 was rumored to be bundled with the PS4 according to IGN. It was apparently cut out so that Sony could undercut Mirosoft’s Xbox One.
There were even a few interesting features that were already built into the system with Eye in mind like the lightbars on the Dualshock 4. They were going to be used in conjunction with the Eye so that when playing in splitscreen the screen for each player would be dependent on the player’s position rather than the controller number deciding who gets the top left screen and so on. I don’t understand what they want us to make of the Playstation Eye 2.0 but with so little focus and the PS4 coming out soon; I do not know what to make of it. As interesting as it might be, the lack of coverage only makes me turned off by the product.
But what do we actually know?
The last I heard of the Eye was during the Feb. 20th reveal of the PS4. The fact it is no longer bundled with the PS4 makes me wonder if it was even that good to begin with. Even if you buy an Eye separately it is only $59.99 which is less than the Kinect 2.0 and makes the PS4 and the Eye still cheaper than an Xbox One. It makes me wonder if the Eye is even close to the power of the Kinect. It is obvious that the Eye will be a significant improvement to the Playstation Eye of last generation. Due to advances in technology, we only know of a few features: the following of the lightbar, motion controls, and voice commands.
Sony really needs to clarify some more of the features and how well they work they are really dissuading us from buying this product that may be able to enhance our gaming experiences. While I am not a fan of Xbox One’s original policies, I still think the Kinect 2.0 can be used in a number of ways to enhance gaming experiences to make them more enjoyable and immersive.
Without a proper example, what are we to think of the Playstation Eye 2.0?
