Top 10 Most Overpowered Items in Games

When it comes to their power, these 10 items stand above others.

Items are a staple part of most games, and they come in a variety of forms. Inevitably, some items end up being far stronger than others, which can make a game feel unbalanced. If you’re looking for some extra strength, these are the top 10 most overpowered items in games.

10 Most Overpowered Items in Games

Stimpack – Fallout Shelter

Although it’s not unique to Fallout Shelter, Stimpacks are a must-have in it. They restore a chunk of health to the characters in your Vault, and you send some with anybody who leaves to explore the Wastelands. The more Stimpacks you have available, the better your chances are for having as many dwellers survive a raid as possible. As your Vault expands, these become more important, since the number of raids increases alongside their difficulty.

Money Tree – The Sims 2

The Sims 2 is quite a bit harder than The Sims 4, meaning that it’s more difficult to keep Sims alive, and you burn through money quicker while taking care of them. Because of that, the Money Tree is an overpowered item to have. You purchase it using Aspiration Points, and you’re able to collect money from it each day. It’s not a ton of money, but a few extra Simoleons a day adds up to help make the game a bit easier.

Deku Stick – Ocarina of Time

Of all the items in Ocarina of Time, the Deku Stick might seem like an odd choice here. However, the Deku Stick is a staple item in speedrunning because of the infinite sword glitch. Using the infinite sword glitch makes the Deku Stick do the same amount of damage as the Master Sword. Being able to get through the game using a stick instead of the sword meant to seal evil definitely makes the stick look overpowered.

Golden Eggs – Resident Evil 4

At least in the original version of RE4, Golden Eggs are overpowered. You can use them as healing items by eating them, which restores your health entirely. However, throwing them at enemies deals a chunk of damage, and can even take out about 70% of Salazar’s health. It’s easy to see why these are considered overpowered as a result.

Omni Gel – Mass Effect Trilogy

Omni Gel doesn’t get enough praise for its uses, but a lot of discussions about overpowered items focus on weapons instead. However, Omni Gel can be used to save time and avoid frustration. Although not part of the first game, locks later in the trilogy start making you solve puzzles to open them. Or you can slap Omni Gel on the locks and bypass the puzzle. If you think about it, that’s both overpowered and convenient.

Cape – Super Mario World

The Cape is without a doubt overpowered in Super Mario World because you can use it to fly over most levels in the game. Using the Cape, you get to skip obstacles and enemies, heading straight to the end of the level in a lot of cases. It’s a simple item, but incredibly powerful and useful.

Star – Mario Franchise

Stars are featured in multiple Mario titles, and they grant you temporary invincibility. This can be overpowered if you use it with the right timing, especially in games like Mario Kart. Depending on how you use it, you can negate otherwise detrimental attacks from other players, such as the lightning strike, being hit by shells, or simple collisions. Since the invincibility effect doesn’t last long, timing is the key to making a Star overpowered.

Fishing Rod – The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

This is another choice that might seem odd when talking about overpowered items. However, the fishing rod has a single moment where it’s overpowered, and that’s during the final fight against Ganondorf. For some reason, you can pull out the fishing rod and cast it, and Ganondorf fixates on it. As a result, his guard lowers, and you’re able to get in a hit. Since this can be a frustrating part of the fight, the fishing rod’s overpowered ability makes it much easier.

Maxwell’s Notebook – Scribblenauts

There’s no way that Maxwell’s Notebook in Scribblenauts can’t be considered overpowered. It spawns objects that are written in it, or adds adjectives to existing items or people. This gives him immense power to handle obstacles, and his power is limited only by his creativity and vocabulary. If I had to pick one item to have in my possession from this list, Maxwell’s Notebook would be my choice.

R8 Revolver – CS:GO

The R8 Revolver is no longer overpowered due to the nerfs it received, but it was once a menace in CS:GO. With the ability to one-shot an enemy with a shot to the chest, it’s clear why this gun was in high demand at the time. In fact, it was so powerful that it was going for hundreds of dollars on the marketplace. Of course, it didn’t take long for the Revolver to be nerfed, meaning that you can no longer find its overpowered form.

These are the top 10 most overpowered items in games, although which items are strong or weak is constantly changing, especially in games that get regular updates. However, these frequent changes help games stay fresh. From here, check out more fun content such as every FFXIV expansion ranked worst to best!
