This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Characters in video games allow for the player to become immersed in these computer generated worlds. Good guy or bad, these people provide loads of entertainment as we learn of their background and actions inside of our games. Some characters are so unique and fascinating that their personas and actions alone speak louder then what they could ever express as words. Here is an opinionated view of some truly extraordinary characters who don't speak, but are still insanely cool.

Voldo-The Soul Calibur series.

Bit of a weird choice, wouldn't you say? But that's exactly what this unorthodox fighter in the Soul Calibur franchise embodies, strangeness. With his insane combat style that's easy to learn, but difficult to master, Voldo is a fascinating character to watch as he flails and dances beautifully on the battlefield. With only spooky grunts and moans being heard from this creepy fighter, Voldo shows how he can communicate with his ominous gestures and attire rather than actual speech.

Doom Guy- The Doom series.

This classic protagonist has been tangling with the literal depths of hell long before the likes of Master Chief or Marcus Fenix arrived on the gaming scene. The original video game badass, Doom Guy has not only won the approval of gamers by his wide array of devastating weapons, but also playing a pivotal role in popularizing the first person shooter genre to what it is today. Truly a silent hero to gamers everywhere.

Jack- The Bioshock series.

Jack is a quiet fellow, who usually lets his library of plasmids or trusty wrench do the talking as he maneuvers his way throughout the city of Rapture. Beside his remarkable superpowers, Jack is our eyes and ears for us as we experience all of Raptures truly horrific side-shows and plot twists, not an easy task to accomplish. What makes Jack a wonderful character is how he has the gift of obedience for the player to fully control his actions, a trait that is sadly figured out by villains in the story as well. Would you kindly?

Link- The Legend of Zelda series.

This mute hero really takes it back to the old school days. Ever since his debut on the jurassic NES, Link has charmed the populace with his intricate swordplay, fashionable hats, and exhilarating quests he regularly embarks on. From fighting Ganondorf on numerous battlefields, to being turned into a freakin deku scrub in Majora's Mask, Link has got a lot on his plate. He always pulls through with his quick wits and ocarina playing. All without talking to! Just please don't mistake him for Zelda.

Gordon Freeman- The Half-Life series.

A name near and dear to my heart, Gordon Freeman had managed to do the impossible, make nerdy scientists completely radical and show us an Oscar worthy story unfold through his eyes without ever so much as gasping for a deep breath. A character that truly represents the combination of brain and brawn, this mute star combats the Xen aliens and the Environmental Combat Unit all without breaking a sweat. When the world is literally collapsing, he is the rock that anchors everything into perspective for us players to get a grip and solve every problem that occurs in the Half-Life games. A valiant silent protagonist, he will forever be remembered as a true hero in his games, as well as demonstrating how immersive storytelling can go in shooters and beyond.
