There have been some really cool, and most epic boss fights in the history of video games. But with there being so many, how do we know which ones are the best? It's all a matter of opinion, with that said this is my list for the 100 best boss fights of all time.
What makes a boss fight the best? Well a number of things; The fight has to be memorable, it can also be epic, or outright insane. A boss fight can be unforgiving in difficultly, or it can be as simple as pressing the A button. Whatever the boss fight is, all that matters is that I enjoyed it in one way or another.
60.) DMC - Bob Barbas
Political opinions aside, Bob Barbas has to be one of the most unique fights in Ninja Theory’s DMC. Dante gets sucked into a electronic world by Bob, and must fight his way through to return to the real world. In the electronic world Bob Barbas is simply a giant floating head that shoots purple beams out, as well as walls of electricity and floor sweeping lasers. After ground pounding the three red platforms, Bob becomes vulnerable for Dante to defeat. “Breaking news Bob, you’re fired!”
59.) Batman: Arkham Asylum - Scarecrow
After being hit with the Scarecrow’s fear poison, Batman hallucinates the entire boss fight. A monstrous Scarecrow emerges from the center of the level, and if Batman is caught in his line of sight its game over. Batman must traverse through an obstacle course of debris in order to get to the bat signal and shine it on Scarecrow. Although there isn’t any fighting involved, the fight is one of the most memorable boss encounters in the game.
58.) Diablo 3 - Belial
One of the longest and notorious acts in Diablo 3 also has one of the coolest boss fights in the game. The first phase of the fight is pretty simple; just beat the crap out of him. But when the second phase hits, things get really epic and exciting. Belial turns into his true form--which is a gigantic demon--and it’s up to the nephalem to avoid his meteor strikes, sweeping attacks and double slams. Definitely one of my favorite boss fights of all time.
57.) Resident Evil 4 - Del Lago
Resident Evil 4 is definitely one of the most intense and terrifying installments of the franchise, and coming across Del Lago is the cherry on top. When Leon crosses the lake via a dinghy, the monstrous Del Lago gives chase, and boy is it a thrill ride. After the anchor gets caught on Del Lago, Leon is dragged all across the lake and must use some left over spears to kill the beast. Make sure you don’t get knocked out of the boat, but if you do swim for your life. Del Lago is Spanish for of or from the lake.
56.) Shadow Of The Colossus - Avion
When I first encountered Avion, I was in awe. A massive flying bird that you had to jump on and fight. Clinging on to its feathers as it soared through the air hundreds of feet above the ground was truly breathtaking. Make sure to stab the runes on both of its wings and then head for its tail, but be careful that tail flails like there is no tomorrow. I remember saying to myself “Ok, when is it going to land so I can fight it?” but boy was I wrong.
55.) Dragon Age: Origins - Flemeth
After Morrigan joins the Warden’s party, you can eventually return to Flemeths hut and fight her. But be wary for Flemeth is not a human, but rather a dragon. Make sure you have plenty of healing and you are at a high level, because Flemeth will wipe the floor with your corpse if you’re not careful.
54.) Dante’s Inferno - Queen Cleopatra and Marc Anthony
Dante’s Inferno is a nightmarish ride through hell that has left me scarred, especially when I fought Queen Cleopatra and her man slave. Taking the elevator up through the circle of lust, is where you begin the fight with Cleopatra, who is gigantic and has the nightmare fueling ability to summon demon babies out of her nipples. After reaching the top of the platform, Cleopatra then spits out her lover, Marc Anthony. Mr. Anthony looks like a train wreck and will wreck you like a train if you’re not careful, plus Cleopatra will try to heal him from time to time. Best to keep your distance and spam ranged attacks on him.
WARNING: This video contains nudity.
53.) Guitar Hero 3 - The Devil Fight
I think one of the coolest parts in the Guitar Hero franchise would have to be fighting the Devil in a guitar battle. This is not just a battle to see who can score the most points, there are punches being thrown and kicks to the face happening. The Devil can throw modifiers at you that can do a real number on you. Like reverse the fret board, break your guitar, and even double the notes you have to play. The battle song? non other than Steve Ouimette’s rendition of The Devil Went Down To Georgia.
52.) God Of War 3 - Poseidon
The God Of War franchise is chalk full of epic fights, but the Poseidon fight stands out as one of the coolest. Kratos challenges Poseidon on top of Gaia, the leader of the titans. Kratos must free Gaia from the grips of Poseidon to allow her to trap him against the cliff side. After a fairly good whooping, Kratos then rips Poseidon out of his water form and beats him to a bloody pulp. Nothing more grotesque than thumbing an enemies eyes in and then snapping his neck.
51.) World of Warcraft - Garrosh Hellscream
The final boss of the Mists of Pandaria expansion is not only a pain, but you also don’t even get to actually kill him. Instead after dealing with 10+ minutes of giant iron fireballs, waves of enemies, and Garrosh himself you and your raid simply knock out the son of Grom. Who then slips away from his trial and punishment. That is some truly epic facepalm action.
Part 1: 100 - 91
Part 2: 90 - 81
Part 3: 80 - 71
Part 4: 70 - 61
If there is a boss fight that you think should be in the list, please let me know.
