BROFORCE: MANLY MEN, EXPLOSIONS, AND EXCESSIVE USE OF CAPS LOCK

BroForce looks hilarious, and fun. But beware, you may grow a beard from the amount of manliness.
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Have you ever played a game and thought “Man, this game needs a ton more of explosions, and a lot more manly ’80s and ’90s action heroes.”

Well, it turns out that the guys at Free Lives decided they had asked that question one too many times, and made a game called BroForce.

What Is BroForce?

BroForce is a “Co-operative Patriotism Simulation;” well, actually, it’s a side-scrolling action game similar to Contra, or Metal Slug. This title features fully destructable environments, over fifteen different Bros, which are homages to ’80s and ’90s action heroes (like The Brominator, RamBro, Bro Hard, Snake Broskin), and many more. Did I mention explosions? Because Michael Bay would shed manly tears of manliness if he saw how many explosions and camera shakes were in BroForce.

Each Bro in BroForce also has unique abilities and special attacks. Like Brochete, which can shoot a barrage of knives at his enemies, or how Bronan can jump high into the air and slam his sword down on an enemy, sending a shockwave of manliness forward.

BroForce also has 2 – 4 player co-op and competitive modes. Like Choppa Run, where you and your Bros must reach the top of a building, or the end of a stage (running to the right) before a wall of explosions and death send you to an untimely grave. The first Bro to the helicopter wins. Oh, did I say “co-op” ? I meant to say Bro-op.

BroForce is being developed by Free Lives, an indie games studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. The game started out as an entry to the Lundum Dare Game Jam in April 2012, where it won first place in Humour, second place in Fun, and fourth in Graphics.

Free Lives loved their entry so much that they decided to pool all of their efforts into making BroForce a fully fleshed out game. Since then, BroForce has been Greenlit by the Steam Greenlight Program, and an Early Access Beta of the game will be available sometime in March 2014.

Here is the full list of features from the game’s website:

  • More explosions, camera shake and action than anything, ever.
  • Fully destructable terrain.
  • Local and Online “Bro-Op” Play.
  • Deathmatch arenas with leaderboards and rankings.
  • Unlockable “Bros” – each with distinctive attacks and special “Brobilities”
  • A level editor.
  • Design your Own Brofort – with unlockable rooms and additions to defend against terrorist onslaught or just hang out.
  • Vehicular action sequences, dinosaurs, aliens and epic Contra-inspired boss fights.
  • For every terrorist killed in BroForce, a terrorist will die in real life.
What Do I Think Of BroForce?

Personally I am really excited for BroForce; it looks like a lot of fun. Plus, I always enjoy some Retro graphics. If BroForce plays anything remotely close Contra or Metal Slug, then I will definitely be sinking my teeth into it. I mean, what’s better than spending an afternoon killing terrorist as your favorite action heroes? NOTHING.

Well, actually, an epic heavy metal soundtrack featuring bands like Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and more just might make playing BroForce all the better. Free Lives, feel free to take a note of that.
