Following Scarlet Nexus‘ reveal during today’s Inside Xbox event, Bandai Namco and Xbox Wire’s Will Tuttle offered an in-depth dive into what makes Scarlet Nexus tick.
As mentioned in our recap, Scarlet Nexus takes place far into the future. It’s less post-apocalyptic, though, and more “we’re in the middle of the apocalypse.” Scientists discovered something called the psionic hormone in the recent past, something that granted psyco-kinetic powers to those with the hormone.
The trouble is, it attracted creatures known as Others who periodically invade and chow on human brains.
They can’t be harmed in the usual ways, so humanity’s last hope is the psionic-powered Other Suppression Force. Players take control of new OSF recruit Yuito Sumeragi, tasked with exploring and defending New Himuka City in “a Brain Punk future caught between technology and physic abilities.”
The city ends up being your biggest ally. Yuito must put his psycho-kinesis to good use, wielding bits of the environment in fantastical combos to help combat the Other menace.
Scarlet Nexus Producer Keita Iizuka said:
The next generation of video game home consoles lets the development team realize the full potential of Scarlet Nexus.
Players can expect visuals and psychic battles with high resolution and frame rate along with fully interactive real-time battles with dynamic animation.
If you’re thinking Yuito’s style looks somewhat familiar, you aren’t mistaken. The Scarlet Nexus leadership team includes a number of members from Bandai’s Tales studio, including some who worked on Tales of Vesperia.
Bandai Namco’s Senior Brand Manager Stephen Akana said of the title:
Scarlet Nexus aims to change the way gamers view Japanese RPGs with a powerful futuristic aesthetic as well as a streamlined combat system that balances fast-paced action with strategic planning.
Although we know the Xbox Scarlet Nexus will take advantage of Smart Delivery, we don’t actually know if Scarlet Nexus is an Xbox Series X launch title or if it belongs to the broader launch window range of titles.
