Changes from Previous Games
Last time around, Civilization V, Greece had an ability called Hellenic League that evolved around city-state influence (how the population of a city-state feels about you or the civilization). It meant that it degraded at a slower rate and recovered at a higher rate. They were also a bit sneaky and had a hidden ability. It wasn’t named but it meant that if Greek units end their turn within an unfriendly or hostile city-states borders, Greece would not lose any influence over them and it meant that they still healed as if they were in friendly territory.
Now, in Civilization VI, the Greek civ have an ability called Plato’s Republic which simply gives an additional wildcard social policy slot, no matter what the current government type it is.
The last change from Civilization V to now is that Greece comes with two leaders.
The Leaders of Greece
At release, Greece gets two leaders in Civilization VI. Both of them have very different special abilities and preferred playstyles. Pericles celebrated General and responsible for uniting the independent states of Greece, and Queen Gorgo, wife of the legendary King Leonidas I.
Pericles brings a unique ability to the game is called Surrounded by Glory. This gives city-states a bonus to culture but only you are the Suzerain of it.
Gorgo’s leader ability is called Thermopylae. This ability gives a bonus to culture points gained when an enemy is defeated.
Unique Greek Districts / Units
Both leaders receive the same unique buildings and unit. The Hoplite is a melee unit which replaces the Spearmen unit. Each Hoplite unit will gain an additional bonus if there is unit Hoplite unit adjacent to it.
The Acropolis is Greece’s unique district, replacing the Theatre Square, and it provides a bonus to Great Person points (Musician, Writer, and Artist). It can also have a big impact on Culture as it will generate additional Culture points when adjacent to a Wonder, another District or the City Center. The Acropolis must also be built on a hill.
Greece Victory Conditions
If you want to win as Greece, you need to make sure you get your Acropolis and Hoplite as early on as possible. The Hoplite units will make sure you have strong enough units to defend against any early era troops and the Acropolis if placed correctly, will generate enough culture points to see that you progress faster than any other civ. As you can progress through the tech trees quicker, you can gain more envoys, quickly create friendships with city-states which will increase culture points even quicker. You are sure to do well with whatever victory condition you strive for.
As you can see, Greece is very versatile with regards to how you want to play. With all the victory conditions viable for Greece, which ones have you played and won? We’d love to hear how you did it!
