It what is becoming a trendy way for developers to get consumers to pre-order a package of DLC, Star Wars: Battlefront will be joining the fray with a $50 Season Pass of their own.
According to the official Star Wars: Battlefront page, the Season Pass will come with four expansion packs that will boast new content, two-week early access to that content and a special “Shoot First” emote.
Details about the Season Pass appear to fall in line with EA’s strategy to market the game by using “early access” as the main selling point to get people to pre-order. By pre-ordering the main game, you are able to gain early access to the Battle of Jakku map that ties into the upcoming film The Force Awakens a full week before everyone else.
Despite the fact that the beta has been largely a success, the benefits that Battlefront is offering for committing now to both the main game and the Season Pass come off as a bit weak. It’s not like we are talking about a matter of months between the early and standard access, it’s only a couple of weeks. Perhaps they have some sales data behind the scenes that shows that gamers really are that impatient, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. But (really) brief, timed exclusivity is not something hang your hat on.
Granted, EA also mentions that more details are incoming on the Season Pass over the next few weeks, so perhaps there is more up their sleeve.
Star Wars: Battlefront launches on November 17, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
