The rest of 2024 has a glut of huge games to look forward to, like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Dragon Age: The Veilgaurd. Nestled amongst those AAA heavy hitters are plenty of indie darlings every gamer needs to keep an eye on. Make sure you’re logged into Steam as you’ll want to add all these gems to your wishlist.
Mirthwood (9/11)
Mirthwood offers an enchanting and immersive sandbox to build a life in. Construct a homestead and then decide to settle down and live the life of a farmer or venture out and explore Mirthwood’s six different regions, with danger lurking abound. You can chat with the local townsfolk, befriend them or romance them in the game’s Sims-like social system.
Melobot – A Last Song (9/12)
Melobot – A Last Song combines action-packed combat with rhythmic gameplay. You’ll play as musical robot Melobot and set off to revive a strange planet with the power of music. Melobot will come across a variety of musical instruments needed for bringing life back to the planet and for combat against mysterious mechanical guardians.
Wild Bastards (9/12)
As a spiritual successor to Void Bastards, Wild Bastards has you recruiting a team of deadly outlaws and traveling a procedurally generated galaxy as a gunslinger. Each of the 13 outlaws has unique weapons, abilities, and personalities which can sometimes clash, and it’s your responsibility to manage the gang. Once the main campaign is completed, a challenge mode unlocks with modifiers to mix up the rougelike experience.
Selfloss (9/12)
Indie games often tell some of the more emotional stories in gaming, and Selfloss looks to follow suit. Taking place in a “Slavic-inspired whale-worshiping fantasy land,” it casts you as Kazimir as he travels in search of a cure for his soul. He’ll encounter others wounded by loss and help them heal. His magical staff will stave off enemies, solve environmental puzzles, and steer your boat.
The Plucky Squire (9/17)
Travel between a 2D storybook and the 3D world outside it in The Plucky Squire. You’ll play as the storybook hero Jot, who is kicked out of the pages by the villainous Humpgrump in an attempt to change the story forever. Jot will travel between worlds, face challenges, and solve puzzles on his journey to restore the book’s happy ending.
Keylocker (9/18)
Keylocker combines turn-based gameplay with precise rhythm timing. As musician Bobo, you’ll rebel against an oppressive system – one that has banned music – and take on church-police Saturnian Satellites in a revolution to bring music back to a silent world. Get to know the local citizens, jam with your band, and make story choices that’ll influence the game’s ending.
Enotria: The Last Song (9/19)
Inspired by Italian folklore, Enotria: The Last Song looks to inject some light into the fundamentally dark soulslike genre. You take on the role of the Maskless One as you venture across the land of Enotria and unravel its secrets. Enotria offers bountiful customization options with 30 masks that alter the way you play in addition to over 100 weapons, 60+ skills, and 40+ spells. Like any soulslike, Enotria will be difficult, but you’ll have a plethora of ways to overcome its challenges.
Europa (10/11)
Originally supposed to have been released in spring before a delay, open world adventure Europa finally lands next month. Blending Breath of the Wild-like exploration and Studio Ghibli-like visuals – just look at the robots plucked straight out of Castle in the Sky – Europa isn’t shy about its inspirations. As android Zee, you’ll set out across a terraformed Europa, platforming across ruins and piecing together the story of the last human.
Neva (10/15)
Nomada Studio’s much-anticipated follow-up outing after the award-winning Gris is just about here. Neva follows Alba and her wolf cub companion as they travel through a decaying world that was once beautiful. Watch the cub grow and mature as it helps Alba on their journey and in combat against dark creatures. Just like with Gris, expect Neva to make wonderful use of color and tell a heart-wrenching story.
On Your Tail (11/21)
On Your Tail is a cozy mystery set in a vacation-ready town inspired by the Italian coast. Borgo Marina offers leisure activities like relaxing at the beach or stargazing alongside its mysteries big and small. You’ll befriend the locals and gather insight from them during your investigation into who is disturbing the traditionally peaceful town.
