Dead Island 2: How to Get Curtis’ Safe Key

In Dead Island 2, if you take the time to rescue Curtis Sinclair from what’s left of his garden party, he’ll tell you to grab whatever you want from his mansion. That includes the contents of the mysterious locked safe in his wine room, but how do you open it? You have to find Curtis’ safe key.

How to Open Curtis’ Valuables Safe in Dead Island 2

Early in DI2, you can save Curtis in the side quest “The Death of the Party,” which starts from his intercom along Alpine Drive. Since he’ll call out to you as you run by, this is a difficult side quest to miss.

Your rewards from the quest include a golf club with the Lightweight perk, which gives you a quicker swing, and Curtis’ House Keys. This gives you the run of his estate and all the goods locked inside, such as a weapon perk blueprint.

If you check Curtis’ wine storage room, however, you’ll find Curtis’ Valuables Safe, which your house key won’t open.

This is one of the first examples of what Dead Island 2 calls a “lockbox,” which is part of several trophies / achievements and Challenges, such as Jumbo Keyring.

As your map will tell you if you mouse over the lockbox’s icon, a unique named zombie somewhere in Hell-A is carrying the key to Curtis’ safe. If you want what’s inside, you’ll need to track that zombie down. Fortunately, you won’t have to go too far out of your way, although it’ll be a while before you see it.

The named zombie you need is Crystal the Lawyer, a Screamer who spawns in Curtis’ back yard at night. In my two runs through Dead Island 2, she’s consistently appeared when I was heading back to Emma’s place during the story quest “Saddle Up for Santa Monica.”

As a unique zombie, Crystal doesn’t have any special abilities that normal Screamers don’t have, but she does have significantly more health. Like all Screamers, she also summons other zombies as backup and Enrages them, making them move and attack faster.

This can be a tough fight if you walk into it unprepared, but you also don’t have to do it right now. You can circle around Curtis’ estate for now and take Crystal on when you’re ready; once she appears, she’ll stay in roughly the same place until you kill her and take her key.

Upon her defeat, Crystal drops typical loot for a Screamer, as well as Curtis’ Safe Key. You can use this to open Curtis’ Valuables Safe, which will contain a randomly generated weapon. In this case, going back to open the safe at level 27, I got a same-level Heavy Revolver with the High Impact perk already built in.

Completing “The Death of the Party” also lets you take the later side quest “Creature Comforts” from Curtis, which has some nice rewards, including the Goat Pen Master Keys.
