Way back when Halo 2 was being crafted by Bungie, a multiplayer mode called Battlegrounds existed that would have basically turned Halo into Battlefield. It got dropped early in Halo 2‘s development, but it seems the mode will not be lost to time forever. Halo 5: Guardians is bringing back the same concept with its ambitious new Warzone mode.
Warzone combines AI controlled Covenant enemies, and two opposing teams of up to twelve players each. The maps for Warzone will be four times the size of traditional Halo multiplayer maps, and feature a far more dynamic ebb and flow of battle as you go from fighting human to AI opponents on a whim. It is effectively a combat sandbox mode, incorporating ideas of Battlefield, Halo: Reach‘s Invasion mode, and Halo 4‘s Spartan Ops.
The mode is the most ambitious take on Halo multiplayer to date. While we only got a brief glimpse at the mode, it is already got quite a number of fans excited:
