Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman told The Verge that 27 percent of Ouya owners have purchased a game and it was not as bad as it sounded. Actually, in the CEO’s eyes, Ouya is doing quite well.
Recently, reports have come out that Ouya does not have any great hits, one where the developers are raking in cash. There are a few titles that have made some money, TowerFall made by Matt Thorson has generated over $21,000, but no one is making millions of dollars on Ouya.
On the road to success
Ouya is billed as a free-to-play system. You can play as many games as you like and if you like a particular game, you can pay to buy the full version. The CEO pointed out that 13 of the top 20 games have an 8 percent conversion rate — so 8 percent of the people that try the game then turn around and buy the game.
Ouya has also set up a $1 million “Free the Games Fund” on KickStarter to match backers on games for the Ouya only. This may bring same great games to the Ouya.
Urman said that ten percent of the gamers on Ouya are purchasing at least one item on the console each day. We will have to wait and see whether they are doing enough to keep the Android-based around long enough to become a household word.
