Double Fine Productions, the independent developer behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, has just announced that it has made twelve members of staff redundant. Tim Schafer, the owner of Double Fine, has said that the ex-employees were working on a secret project that was unexpectedly cancelled by its publisher. With the unfinished game unable to bring in any revenue, the developer has been forced to let them all go.
Schafer has been keen to stress that these layoff have not affected any of the other projects that his company is working on. Double Fine Productions have announced three of the games they’re got in the works, including the second act of point-and-click adventure game Broken Age. The first Act released earlier this year in January 28, with Kickstarter-backers getting it two weeks early.
Double Fine’s other two projects are the crowdfunded strategy game Massive Chalice and Grim Fandango Remastered, a remake of the 1998 LucasArts adventure title. All three titles are due out before the end of the year so the employees were probably working on a 2015 game.
We’ll likely never know what the cancelled project was but our thoughts go out to the people who’ve lost their jobs and all those affected by the layoffs.
