A Link to Virtual Reality: Legend of Zelda’s Ocarina of Time on the Oculus Rift!

Did you ever love Ocarina of Time enough to want to actually live it? One developer is single-handedly attempting to make that dream a little closer to reality.

It’s a step both into the past and the future all at once. Hot on the heels of the original Legend of Zelda making it onto the Oculus Rift come new gameplay footage featuring the same virtual reality treatment given to Ocarina of Time.

In a recent playthrough by Chadtronic of the extremely limited proof-of-concept, we get a glimpse of how the original Kokiri Forest from the N64 can be experienced anew from an entirely different, and incredibly immersive, perspective.

As you can see, it is still very much a simple walk-around demo, with essentially nothing to interact with – though Chadtronic certainly tries, obviously missing the classic image of watching a ginger-haired Kokiri locked in a futile struggle with a small rock.

While there are a few objects visible on the landscape (the circle of rocks, the buildings), some animations, character models, pieces of music, or game mechanics have been included as yet.

Still, the project is far from finished, and the creator has promised that it will continue, now under the name Project: Ocarina, and that he is already deep into further development. All of the 3D modelling begins from a RAM dump from an emulator and DarkAkuma takes over from there, which means updates will be likely take a while in coming.

Undaunted, DarkAkuma has already announced that next up on the development horizon is the Temple of Time, already mostly completed. Outside of area completion, the developer also promises to give the user a body, one that is fully animated to run, walk, jump, and crawl.

Meanwhile, for those lucky (or rich) enough to possess an Oculus Rift developer kit, you can download the Ocarina of Time Rift demo here

Getting your hands on an Oculus Rift has never felt like such a priority, has it?
