Accused Hacker Destroyed Evidence, Avoided Jail

The breach of Sony’s PlayStation Network was a huge deal.  The personal information of millions was no longer secure.  Naturally one would expect the people responsible, when caught, to be brought to justice.  Todd M. Miller is one of the people suspected of taking part in the high-profile hack, and was recently sentenced to a year of house arrest and three years of probation.

If he hadn’t destroyed his multiple PlayStation 3 consoles and the hard drive from his computer, he might have faced up to twenty years in prison.

Miller was questioned by the FBI back in 2011, and after talking to them he went home and destroyed all of the machines in question before the FBI was able to get a search warrant.  As a result, there was not enough evidence to actually accuse Miller of most hacking offenses.

While the judge decided ultimately that Miller had been largely a victim of bad circumstances and bad friends, the stability he has managed to gain in his life since the hacking took place makes it extremely unlikely he will participate in another such cyber-attack.
