Angry Birds, I was slow jumping on the bandwagon. When I did, though, I liked you for a while. Now you need to go sit down somewhere.
Like, now.
Clothes, overpriced dog toys, and now a 3-D, CG animated movie set for summer 2016.
Oversaturation, ahoy!
According to today’s press release from Rovio (on the franchise’s third birthday), John Cohen, producer of the adorable Despicable Me, will produce the Angry Birds flick. He also produced Alvin and the Chipmunks, though, so you do the math. From Cohen:
“From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I’ve personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie.”
Executive Producer of Iron Man, David Maisel, will be, well, the Executive Producer on the project. Maisel is equally excited to be on the team:
“John’s experience, expertise, and passion are perfect for the Angry Birds film and I look forward to working with him to create the best movie experience for all the fans,”
Rovio will finance the venture and maintain complete control over it. They have the capacity to produce, too. In preparation for the film and releasing a series of 52 weekly animated shorts, the company bought out Finnish studio Kombo.
Since 2009, Angry Birds has been downloaded over one billion times, with 20 million to 30 million daily players. The latest release in the franchise, Angry Birds Star Wars, shot to number one on the iPhone charts in less than three hours.
I hope three years is long enough for Rovio to realize (or care!) that this is going to be annoying for me.
Probably not.
