Video game developer Stardock has been working on something big for a while, and it looks like they’re finally ready to unveil it in full. The company has announced that the Early Access phase for their epic real-time strategy game, Ashes of the Singularity, begins today on Steam.
Similar to other RTS titles, the player’s goal in Ashes of the Singularity is to build their troops and take over as much land and resources as possible, while simultaneously preventing incoming attacks from other players. The one factor that really separates Stardock’s RTS from everything else is the massive scale:
What makes Ashes of the Singularity special is just the sheer scale of the game…”
-Brad Wardell, President & CEO, Stardock
Players will begin with groups of soldiers, which will grow into armies of up to tens of thousands of units as they fight for entire planets in a war that rages across the galaxy.
Stardock is utilizing the power of a new 3D engine created by Oxide Games called Nitrous. Nitrous was designed specifically to work with modern, multi-core hardware and is the first to support DirectX 12.
The rendering method we use in Nitrous is essentially the same as the techniques CGI in movies have used, except on modern hardware we can do it in real-time.
-Dan Baker, Principal Graphics Architect, Oxide Games
Ashes of the Singularity‘s Early Access is available now, though Wardell crucially notes that this beta is not for everyone. He has urged that only experienced RTS players with high end hardware should consider joining.
