Long-time survival-horror game fans of might remember the (quite humourous) terrors of Atari’s Haunted House (1982) and Alone in the Dark (1992). Although I have to admit, Alone in the Dark did scare younger-me! Atari announced yesterday that they are working on a re-mastered version of these games, which will be released this Autumn for PC. Meaning that we’ll finally be able to experience these classics in HD!
Haunted House will keep its original name, becoming the fourth game under the same title. The developers behind the newest Haunted House are an Italian studio called Dreampainters. These are well-known for their PC horror game Anna, which gained popularity due to its chilling atmosphere and intimate storyline that the game managed to create, even though the player was limited to a small house. Allesandro Monopoli, the founder of Dreampainters, gave clues to the development of this game earlier this year by saying:
“Ah! We have a fantastic announcement ready in our “send” buttons. Think about a VERY old IP from a major publisher, and the total reboot of this IP. That’s what I can tell you.”
Dreampainters also announced last year that they were going to make a follow-up to Anna based around the same universe, called White Heaven. However not much has been heard about this since. Perhaps it’s because they’ve been working hard on Haunted House!
Alone in the Dark: Illumination, is the name of the new Alone in the Dark revitalization. This is in development at Pure, who are a smaller company with little known about them. However you can sign up for updates on the games progress from their teaser website.
You can expect to see both the new Haunted House and Alone in the Dark: Illumination games at PAX Prime later this month.
