Battlefield Will Deploy on Mobile Devices in 2022

EA and DICE have confirmed that a Battlefield mobile game is in the works for phones and tablets.

The Battlefield franchise started on PC in 2002 with Battlefield: 1942 before moving to consoles on the PlayStation 2 with Battlefield 2: Modern Combat in 2005. Now the first-person shooter series is making its way to mobile sometime in 2022.

EA and DICE officially unveiled the project for mobile phones and tablets in a blog post on the official Battlefield website. Outside of its intended release window, there’s scant information about the game so far. It doesn’t have a name yet, and we don’t know what platforms it’s coming to. It’s completely safe to guess Apple and Android devices, but that’s extremely broad and, since it’s unconfirmed, just speculation.

DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson said that Battlefield Mobile (as we’re calling it at GameSkinny for now) is unrelated to the next mainline Battlefield game coming to PC and consoles in 2021. It is being developed by EA subsidiary Industrial Toys in concert with DICE. Industrial Toys has previously worked developed the first-person shooters Midnight Star and Midnight Star: Renegade.

Gabrielson said of the project:

It’s always been our vision to bring Battlefield to more platforms. So, after years of prototyping, I’m super happy to be able to let you know that our friends at Industrial Toys, working closely with all of us here at DICE, are developing a completely new Battlefield game bringing all-out warfare to smartphones and tablets in 2022.

Make no mistake, this is a standalone game. A completely different game from the one we’re making for console and PC, designed specifically for the mobile platform. It’s being built from the ground up by iToys to make Battlefield-on-the-go a reality and you can expect a fully-fledged, skill-based experience. This mobile game is now entering a testing period ahead of launching next year, so expect more details to come.

It will be interesting to see how a game like Battlefield translates to mobile, though plenty of other large-scale shooters have done just fine, including Fortnite and Call of Duty Mobile. Perhaps we’ll learn more about the project at E3 2021, which is an all-digital event this year, running from June 12 to June 15. If not there, the Summer Game Fest 2021 could be another potential reveal event. Either way, stay tuned.
