MMORPG.com recently spoke with Pearl Abyss developer Daeil Kim about their new game called Black Desert. Founded in 2010, Pearl Abyss is working on finishing up their first title–this fantasy sandbox-style MMORPG is reaching towards its very own first closed beta test. The interview explains some of the various gameplay aspects including PvP.
According to Daeil Kim, Black Desert is not an RvR game, but a PvP with your own housing and loads of fun action combat. Kim goes on to tell us how action combat sequences go beyond “simply pressing number keys”. Archers can mount on horses while in combat and shoot down enemies from afar. He also commented,
In action games, the timing of pressing a key and a mouse click, as well as a monster’s reaction against the user’s attack, is extremely important. We are trying to develop our game so that players must purposefully control their character and so that objects or monsters react in a more complex manner.
Also, Pearl Abyss has developed their own 3D engine that there using to create Black Desert with. MMORPG.com had asked why was a sandbox MMO more important and Kim states,
It’s very important to both users and developers that stories are constantly being created, and with a sophisticated and well-made system thousands of ideas can be developed. This is definitely what an open sandbox world can bring to a game.
The Republic of Calpheon and the Kingdom of Valencia are the two countries within the game. Both have been in conflict for decades to obtain “Black Stone” (a key resource). Black Desert allows you to buy houses, but at a certain limit. Players can even occupy and claim via sieges in both countries.
With stunning graphics, simple action combat, and a wide variety of things to buy, kill, and explore, Black Desert looks to be one uniquely badass MMO. As of now, Korea is gonna get into the closed beta, but afterwards Pearl Abyss is looking at expanding with Western publishers. No exact time of release as of yet.
