Black Ops 3 story trailer shows a not-so-perfect future

Black Ops 3 seeks to tell a tale of how horribly wrong future warfare can go

‘Be careful what you wish for’ seems to be the name of the game here.

Black Ops 3 shows how much thinner the line between man and machine is becoming in its futuristic world. Deus Ex jokes aside, the game feels like it will tell a rather bleak tale about how much of your humanity you have to sacrifice in order to become something more.

The phrase ‘direct neural interface’ comes up a few times during the trailer. Now, the standard textbook definition describes this is a communication pathway between the brain and an external device. This makes sense, seeing as Black Ops 3 seems to feature cyborgs – unless I’m extremely wrong (which I seriously doubt. I mean c’mon, there’s a guy who goes by the call-sign ‘war machine’!)

I guess we can take this to mean the brain is the only thing that makes these guys human, and their bodies are that ‘external device’. The problem with a communication pathway though, is that it’s open both ways.

If your brain is connected to a…server of sorts (I’m shooting in the dark now) in order to control that external device which is your technologically augmented body, you are exposing yourself to being controlled by external factors. Perhaps your enemies are going to be hacking into your brain and making you turn your gun on your allies?

You don’t need to take my word for it. I’m sure you guys will draw similar conclusions by watching this trailer. I’m hoping that the story will feature much more than that, since it’s rather predictable. But then again, I’m one of those people who buys Call of Duty for the sole purpose of multiplayer.

And zombies. Who doesn’t love zombies?
