When it comes to shooters, Gearbox Software’s Borderlands is definitely at the top of my list. Now Gearbox Software has announced its newest project: Battleborn.
A whole new world
Battleborn is what Gearbox calls a “first-person battle arena.” The game’s publisher is 2K games, the same company that publishes the Borderlands series. According to a press release released today by 2K Games, Battleborn takes place in the distant future. The game is an “ambitious fusion of genres” that will combine stylized visuals with first-person action. There will be an “expansive collection of diverse heroes” to play as in the game’s co-op campaign and competitive multiplayer modes.
Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said in a statement:
“If Borderlands 2 is a shooter-looter, Battleborn is a hero-shooter…As a genre-fused, hobby-grade, co-operative and competitive FPS exploding with eye-popping style and an imaginative universe, Battleborn is the most ambitious video game that Gearbox has ever created.”
2K games president Christoph Hartmann also had this to say:
“The size, scope, and ambition of Battleborn are unlike any other title in 2K’s history, and the result is a defining next-gen co-operative experience.”
As I said before, I love Borderlands.
Thus, I am waiting to see what Gearbox Software has in store for Battleborn. I have never really been into MOBAs, so Battleborn could be my way of getting into the genre.
How Gearbox approaches the MOBA genre will be what I am waiting to see. Hopefully they will be able to take what made Borderlands so great and inject it into their new game, while keeping things fresh. The fact that the game is hitting a new genre can help it be in a place of its own. Hopefully we will see more of what Gearbox has in store for Battleborn as we approach the game’s release.
Battleborn will see release during 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal year 2016, ending March 31, 2016. Battleborn is in development for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
