Kingdom Hearts 3 players looking for a more challenging experience will soon get their wish when Critical Mode is made available in a free update on April 23. News of the content release came via Twitter as both the English and Japanese Kingdom Hearts accounts posted a note from the game’s director Tetsuya Nomura.
The note was short but sweet, and it should have Kingdom Hearts 3 fans excited.
Greetings, it’s been a while since I last posted. Spring is here, and I hope everyone is doing well. #KingdomHearts III’s long-awaited Critical Mode is available as a free update tomorrow (PT).

Critical Mode, which has appeared in previous Kingdom Hearts games — notably Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, Birth By Sleep, Re: Coded, 3D: Dream Drop Distance, and Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage — was announced for Kingdom Hearts III in February.
Unlike some other promised content for the game, Critical Mode is a free DLC offering. Paid DLC will include story-related and other content.
As noted in the tweet, KH3‘s version of Critical Mode will be different from what players have seen in previous games, although the specific differences were not stated.
However, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to Kingdom Hearts fans as the mode has varied a bit in each of the games it has appeared in. What remains the same is that the mode makes things a good bit more difficult for players, increasing the overall challenge of the game.
Considering Kingdom Hearts 3 released near the end of January, giving dedicated players the time to complete at least one run through, the release of Critical Mode should be exciting news.
For those more interested in finding out more about the game’s story that will, unfortunately, have to wait until the paid DLC is released sometime in the future.
