The DotA 2 world championship tournament has all the popularity, with fans raising over 10 million dollars for prizes and over 10,000 tickets sold to watch the tournament live. The International (the name of the tournament) makes Valve immensely popular among the competitive game circuit and they want to continue that streak of success.

The Director of DotA 2, Valve’s Erik Johnson, sat down with the folks at Prodota.ru to talk about the potential to bring the tried-and-true title, Counter-Strike, into the competitive realm.

He states in the interview that he doesn’t see any reason the competitive model wouldn’t just transfer over to the game.

“I don’t know if it would be called The International, but the guys working on Counter-Strike made a lot of progress on supporting the professional community around that game,” said Johnson. “We all work at the same company and share a lot of ideas, and given how successful this tournament [The International] has become I don’t see any reason why a lot of the same things couldn’t be applied directly to Counter-Strike.”

Although he didn’t give us any definitive answers on whether we would see a competitive Counter-Strike tournament to the scale of DotA 2, he does give us the hope that there could be one.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the second most played game on the Steam platform, right behind DotA 2

Being a Counter-Strike player myself, I would love to see this game get the respect it deserves in terms of the competitive nature of it. Do you think it’s a good idea to have a massive-scale tournament for CS:GO? Do you think it would do well?
