The Guinness World Records “Longest-Running Japanese RPG Series” has a new entry on the way. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince was announced at the June 2023 Nintendo Direct presentation with a gameplay trailer. You’ll take on the monsters of the land with…well, more monsters. Releasing just in time for the holidays on December 1, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince will be available on Nintendo Switch. Here’s what we know so far.
The Dark Prince puts you in the shoes of a young Psaro, a cursed demon prince, in the world of Dragon Quest 4. Currently on a quest for revenge, he’s been cursed not to harm any monsters. However, an old man shows up and teaches him the ways of the Monster Wrangler, allowing you to tame monsters to fight other monsters.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince features over 500 unlockable monsters through the redesigned synthesis system. Combine monsters found throughout the land to create completely new monsters, including dark lords and fan favorites from other Dragon Quest games.

You’ll travel through the land of Nadiria through the changing seasons, which allows you to collect new monsters that only appear at specific times — and the list is sure to be big. Though there’s still more to learn, we do know that a major pillar of the story revolves around you gathering your forces as you work to become the Master of Monsterkind, and once you’ve built a strong enough team, you can battle online against other players to see who’s really the best Monster Wrangler.
More information on the types of monsters and the synthesis system is sure to be released as December draws near, though we know there will be a whopping three DLC packs for the game soon after launch. Stay tuned for more on Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince.
