EA takes up the cause for gay rights

EA formally opposes the Defense of Marriage Act and fights for equal marriage rights under the law.

Electronic Arts participated in Vice President Joe Biden‘s talks on gun violence, but that is not the only political statement this publisher has made in recent news. EA announced nearly a year ago that it is actively opposing the Defense of Marriage Act, but today according to a company press release, the publisher has joined the Business Coalition for DOMA Repeal. This announcement comes on the tail of possibly unfounded accusations of gay discrimination in the publisher’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The Coalition, a conglomerate of 12 Fortune 500 companies, has joined together to support the “ending federal discrimination against legally married gay and lesbian couples” according to the Human Rights Campaign website. EA joins the ranks of Marriott, Bristol-Myers, Ebay, and others in proposing a rival bill to DOMA called the Respect for Marriage Act, which would in effect repeal DOMA and give federal support to same-sex marriage.

Granted, EA won the Consumerist’s award for worst company in 2012, but perhaps the company is trying to take steps in the right direction for 2013. Now if only we could get the company to create a free-to-play model that is designed to make its customers happy and not just line investors’ pockets.
