Fable Legends Announced at Gamescom

New Fable game let's you team up with three others or play the villain.

Anyone who enjoys Fable will be excited about this news. Fable Legends was officially announced at Gamescom as a 5-player game. It may not be Fable 4 or the rumored Fable MMO, but it still looks good. The disappointment many fans had with Fable 3, and Fable multiplayer in general, may have them skeptical, but this looks like a title to at least pay attention to.

4-player co-op

In Fable Legends, players can choose between different characters that all have specific abilities like classes, and complete dungeons. Only four types were shown in the video, but I bet there will be more available. From what I’ve seen in the video, players will be fighting through whatever obstacles the villain player puts in their way. A.I will be substituted for human heroes, so I can assume the same will go for villains.

Still an explorable world?

This I can’t tell at this time. Based on the information it looks like a matchmaking type of game where you play a round of heroes versus villain, then move on to the next match. There is, however, player progression and emotes so it’s possible that it will have the same free-roam style world that Fable 1-3 had. If this is the case, it will be interesting to see how the villain aspect is done.

Be the villain – that sends others to do everything

I’m sure this aspect of the game will have mixed feeling from players. If you choose to be the villain, your game play changes to top-down RTS-style.

It’s a cool concept to be the sort of classical villain, controlling others to do your bidding and changing the obstacles the heroes have to overcome, but at the same time, it would be nice to have traditional Fable game play.

This changes the style of the game from what we’re used to so far. Fable II, for example, you would make decisions throughout the game on what your character’s persona would be. You could change mid-way through the game that you wanted to be that heroic knight, instead of that dark overlord. In Fable Legends you must choose at the beginning of the game how you want the dice to roll. Whether you choose villain or hero, you won’t be able to change.

The future of Fable

Though I can’t say for sure without more information, it seems the Fable series is going to continue to go different routes from the original games. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just… different. It’s great in a way for innovation and experimenting on new game ideas, but some players just want some good ‘ole fashioned Fable. Anyways, this is one to keep an eye on for Fable fans, or anyone else that may find this style interesting. Fable Legends will be an Xbox One exclusive, but no further details have been given.
