Where should the next chapter in the Fallout series take place? Ex-Fallout developer has an idea.
Fallout 4 is a small idea. We may know that the game is in development but there is one question to answer: Where will it take place? While many people believe the setting will be in Boston, MA we still don’t know for sure. Obsidian, who developed Fallout: New Vegas had a few idea on where to take the franchise.
In an interview with IGN, Fallout: New Vegas director Josh Sawyer had this to say:
“It’s a really fun setting and intellectual property to work with, I love doing rules and mechanics stuff and then expanding the setting is a lot of fun. I like doing stuff on the West coast because we’re close by, and that’s kind of been a tradition for the West coast developers of that stuff. I think going back to the Boneyard, LA, would be pretty cool but another area that I think Nathanial Chapman who used to work at Obsidian, he thought New Orleans would be a really cool setting for a Fallout game and I think that’d be really cool as well.
“Personally, I think there are some interesting things that could happen with Fallout in an MMO environment. There are some folks who kind of cobbled together all the Fallout 2 resources into kind of a makeshift MMO, made by fans. It was pretty cool but insane. It’s like if you take all of the most brutal aspects of Ultima Online and multiply them by five, you have that game. So I think there’s interesting potential for an online version of Fallout.”
If Bethesda were to let Obsidian develope another Fallout game, we have a strong idea where they might set it. But for now, I don’t think Bethesda has any plans to turn Fallout into an MMO, unlike their other IP Elder Scrolls Online.
Personally, I think New Orleans would be a nice setting for the Fallout world. But to talk about an MMO is bad–considering the map sizes. The Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Wasteland are too small. They should reboot the entire franchise. It’s a risky take but if Bethesda were to have an idea for an MMO, they would have to consider re-sizing the map. But anywhere is fine. I have full confidence in everything Bethesda has to offer. In Fallout 3, Boston was mention plenty as the “Commonwealth”, a land full of Androids. So if Boston was the way to go, I think we would know what to expect. And with the PS4 and Xbox One out, they can use both consoles to their full potential.
What do YOU think about this? Should Bethesda let Obsidian develope another Fallout? Where do you think Bethesda should take the next Fallout? Whats your opinion on a Fallout MMO and a reboot?
