Columnist Ryahl Smith from MMORPG.com decided to work on all the non-combat classes in Final Fantasy XIV. His primary goal was to figure out how to create materia. He goes on to play as all Botanist, Miner, Carpenter and Armorer.

Smith starts out as a level 17 Armorer. For those who don’t know, Materia is the Final Fantasy system that is used with customizing your gear. To make Materia, you need to be a level 19 artisan. Crafters get bonus XP for their first creation of an item. The Botanist harvesting class can make logs and Carpenter class can make lumber from those logs. Botany have several “radar” type abilities which help you find the nearest node. Gathering Points (GP) are used up when you use your crafting abilities. Crafting in FFXIV is a mini-game where you try to complete progress while maximizing quality. Miners mine materials and Armorers make armor, its that simple.

After finshing up some crafting, you level level up as a crafter and can make higher tier items. Turning in a level with a high quality (HQ) item results in a 200% bonus. Mutamix (a goblin next to a bonfire) specializes in Materia and he happily teach characters above level 19 about the Materia system.

Additionally, the Materia system serves as a way to put together the various adventuring classes, crafting classes, and harvesting classes. A piece of gear you can break down and turn into Materia, a new piece of gear which you will make the Materia with, and a catalyst obtained from harvesting tier 4 nodes (level 16+) is all you require for Materia.

In the end, Smith had made a Decorated Bronze Mitt Gauntlets and even added some Accuracy to it too. Making items, armor, and weapons just got a whole new ball game opened up.

I can’t wait to start making my own armor when FFXIV comes out in August 27, 2013, for PC and PlayStation 3.
