It’s the first day of the Tokyo Game Show, and with that comes a ton of new Square Enix trailers. The biggest news we have is coming from a beautiful new trailer for the Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster, which has been given a release window.
The trailer starts by showcasing some of the gorgeous new FMVs in Final Fantasy X, with a few quotes from the game’s various cutscenes. It goes on to show off several of the characters’ remastered overdrives, including many of the Aeons’. Then, it switches to X-2, giving us a look at dressphere changes and a few small FMV clips.
The big news, however, is at the end of the trailer. The final promotional images say that the games will be released “this winter.”
A “winter” release is a bit problematic for a few reasons. The biggest is that it seems to confirm an earlier rumor that the Remaster had been pushed back to 2014. Winter runs from December to March, so that’s a pretty wide window, If it were going to be put out in December, they would probably use a Holiday 2013 tag, though since they are a Japanese company they might forgo that particular tag.
This also might push the release date really close to the release of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which drops internationally in early February. Sales of both games might hurt a fair amount if they are released to close to each other, since not all gamers can afford both games, especially in such a close window. The hope is that this doesn’t mean that the Final Fantasy X Remaster will be pushed to late March. That would put a decent buffer between the two games, but it would also mean we have to wait even longer to play Final Fantasy X again in HD.
