Since its beginning, Fortnite has ranked its weapons and cosmetics according to rarities, ranging from Common to Legendary and beyond. However, Epic Games has shown this is an ever-evolving game, and to prove it even more, it is getting rid of rarities for cosmetics altogether.
Fortnite‘s routine patch on April 9, 2024, also added a minor, unexpected update to the game — cosmetics, such as skins, pickaxes, gliders, etc., will no longer have rarities. From now on, we’ll say goodbye to all colors and rarities on these types of items, making them all equal in value. Reliable leaker Shiina announced the news on Twitter by sharing Epic Games’ official statement about it: “old Battle Royale-inspired system of colors and tags for cosmetics has been removed!”
When you look at your locker now, you may notice all items appear the same. The only exceptions to this are items from significant collabs, such as the Marvel, DC Series, Gaming Legends, and Icon Series. These items show off their proper tags beside the item type and have an aura around their icons.
There are some mixed feelings about this sudden change. With it being a feature since the beginning, seasoned players feel slightly disappointed as the game strays further away from the OG experience. Others feel a bit confused as to why it was even necessary in the first place. Even though it’s only a minor change that doesn’t really affect gameplay, it changes the way we look at certain cosmetics and items. Some items appear less valuable than they might have been before.
Thankfully, we can appreciate some good news along with the cosmetic confusion. Starting in May, Epic Games states it will add rotation timers to all items in the shop. The shop will also rotate at different times for each timezone instead of globally. This change will help players to keep better track of when items will be coming and leaving. It also fixes the problem of odd rotations for some time zones, preventing players from being able to check it as often.
Epic Games is making many changes to Fortnite, as already evident from the multi-verse game modes. These little updates prove even more that the game will continue to grow and evolve. It may take us some time to get used to these new features, but they’ll be more accessible in the long run.
