It’s time to dust off those browncoats and join the ‘Verse! Fox Digital Entertainment announced yesterday at San Diego Comic Con 2013 that a social role-playing game based on the cult-favorite Firefly is coming to iOS and Android smartphones in summer 2014.
The game is based on Joss Whedon’s short-lived, but widely acclaimed Firefly, which aired on FOX in 2002. Although only 14 episodes aired, the television series spawned a movie titled Serenity and maintains a large fan following.
The mobile game, which is being developed by QMXi and Spark Plug Games, features customizable ships as players assume the role of a captain who must recruit a crew and adventure in the ‘Verse. The game will also feature a trading ability between players, as well as cross-platform functionality. QMXi and Spark Plug have also stated that the game may eventually be ported to other platforms.
Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi, emphasized the power of the Firefly universe, as well as that of the Browncoats, the recognized name for the shows devoted fans. “It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life in every way possible,” Gore said. “The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures – well, that’s just too shiny for words”
Following the announcement, the game’s official website was launched and offers pre-registration to fans, as well as more information about the game.
