This number came out of a shareholder presentation from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company.

The success of the Grand Theft Auto franchise has a lot to do with it’s most recent entry, Grand Theft Auto V. GTA V alone has shipped over 54 million units, a staggering accomplishment.

The report also stated that Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption has shipped more than 14 million units and 2K’s Borderlands series has shipped more than 26 million units.

If I had to guess, I would say that Grand Theft Auto’s success has a lot to do with timing. Since we don’t receive a GTA game every year it seems to be much more welcomed, as opposed to an annualized franchise.

In addition to not wearing down their brands, Rockstar just flat out makes very good video games, specifically GTA and Red Dead Redemption. So let me know in the comments what you think makes GTA and other Rockstar franchises so great.
