Halo Wars: Definitive Edition Coming to the Windows Store and… Steam?

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is making its way to PC, but not just on the Windows Store.

Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is getting a standalone release set to come out April 20th. It will be launching on Xbox One and the Windows Store — but even more surprising, it will also be releasing on Steam.

As Destructoid originally pointed out, this is unexpected simply because Microsoft has been pushing hard for Xbox One and the Windows Store service on Windows 10 to be the absolute go-to place for its video games. So for a first-party title from Microsoft itself to end up on Steam (seemingly its top competitor in the digital marketplace on PC) — is a bit of a shock, but it’s also a smart business move in the short term.

Despite Microsoft and many others trying to push their own digital storefronts for games on PC, Steam is still the largest platform on the marketplace with an active userbase of well over 10 million users at any given moment on the storefront — every single day.

Even so, releasing Halo Wars: Definitive Edition on Steam might actually be a smart move for Microsoft. Though the Valve-owned platform is their most direct competitor, it’s also likely the best hope for the game to see any long-term success or profit.

Will you be checking out Halo Wars: Definitive Edition? If so, which platform do you intend to play or purchase it on? Let us know in the comments!
