If you thought you’d seen the last of the Helldivers, you’d be wrong. A Helldivers 2 trailer was one of the first things shown off during Sony’s 2023 PlayStation Showcase — and it struck a decidedly irreverent, Starship Troopers vibe. No gameplay was shown, but the game was confirmed to be in development and set to release sometime in 2023 for PC and PlayStation 5.
It’s been quite some time since anyone has heard a whisper of a sequel to the original co-op shooter, but neither developer Arrowhead Game Studios nor publisher Sony has forgotten about it.
While we don’t know a ton about Helldivers 2, we do know that it will feature gameplay similar to the original, letting you team up in co-op to defeat aliens and restore order. A PlayStation Blog post by Katherine Baskin, Social Media and Community Manager at Arrowhead Game Studios said that there will be superpowered primary weapons and customizable loadouts … [and] the ability to call on stratagems during gameplay.”
There are a few more small tidbits scattered throughout the post, such as synergies between team members, abilities, upgrades, and unlocks. But overall, we’ll still need to wait for more information. Oh, and there will be friendly fire, of course.
You can wishlist the game on the PlayStation Store. Currently, it’s not available on Steam, but that will change soon, we’re sure. Stay tuned for more on Helldivers 2 as we learn it. In the meantime, head over to the Helldivers 2 PS Blog post for a slightly longer rundown of what to expect.
