Hideki Kamiya Gives More Information on Xbox One Exclusive Scalebound

Platinum Games director gives us some new insight on how Scalebound will be different than the other games he's worked on.

The time to mount a dragon and take down monolithic beasts is nigh with this next-gen title by Platinum Games.

At E3 2014, Microsoft announced Scalebound as an exclusive title for the Xbox One, as well as a new partnership with Platinum Games. The reveal trailer showed off a beautiful landscape with dragons and a number of beasties that needed to be fended off by the human inhabitants. We saw collaboration between fiercesome dragons and a human counterpart, fighting off horrifying, hydra-like creatures. 

While no more information has been given about this title’s specifics, Platinum Games’ director Hideki Kamiya spoke in a recent interview about how the game was going to be different than anything they have done before:

The one thing that I will say is that up until this point in my career, and up until this point in Platinum Games’ history, we’ve never made a game like Scalebound.What I’m trying to do with Scalebound is create a very different kind of game than what I’ve created up until this point. We’re trying to create new gameplay, and that is a challenge for me personally.

A former Devil May Cry and Bayonetta developer, Kamiya is known for his difficult games, which require you to be stylish and well-prepared for the whatever the game has to throw at you. This time around, however, Kamiya says that this “is not the type of difficulty that [Scalebound is] going to demand from the players.” He goes onto say:

“Easy or difficult can be defined in so many different ways. For example, if it was a very text or dialog heavy game, but yet you went to point where you felt puzzled. So in the past it was really intense, you know really high impact high pace sort of action games that require skills.

In that sense, it may not deliver the experience you’ve seen from our games, but at the same that doesn’t mean that it will be easy.” 

In the same interview, Kamiya goes on to comment that Scalebound will have many different approaches to the battles or encounters, which make it a lot less linear than a title like Devil May Cry. You can read more of the interview with Kamiya here.

While no official release date has been set, this new information has given gamers a little bit more to go on til Platinum Games and Microsoft are ready to announce when we’ll get to fly with the dragons.
