Developer Heart Machine has unveiled a first look at gameplay for its upcoming semi-sequel Hyper Light Breaker. Set within the universe of Hyper Light Drifter, this latest adventure is a massive departure from the first game’s more Zelda-like thrills. Instead of being set in a top-down pixel art dystopia, you’ll be able to explore the world of Breaker with full 3D movement from a third-person perspective.
The biggest announcement here is that Gearbox Publishing will be helping to bring Hyper Light Breaker to the finish line. Coinciding with the seventh anniversary of Drifter‘s release, this latest trailer comes with the confirmation that Breaker will be released on Steam Early Access later this fall. You’ll be able to help the dev team fine-tune Breaker as it develops and changes over the coming months.
Alx Preston, creator of Hyper Light Drifter and creative director for Heart Machine, said, “Hyper Light Breaker will bolster the mysterious universe of Hyper Light, with vast, ever-changing open worlds with distinct micro-biomes, brutal enemies, a wide array of unique weapons and hidden secrets… This gameplay reveal is just the start; we have so much more in store.”
Another big addition in Breaker is the introduction of cooperative play. Taking a form similar to Risk of Rain 2, you can team up and explore procedurally generated worlds as you uncover new loot and establish settlements around the map. It certainly seems like Breaker will be a much longer experience than the first game.
Currently, Hyper Light Breaker has been announced for just PC. It will likely head to consoles once it leaves Early Access. You can wishlist the game on Steam right now.
